Restoration of Citizenship

※ Before applying for restoration of nationality, you must complete the report of loss of nationality and report of domestic residence. Afterwards, you must apply for restoration of nationality by bringing a certificate of residence. (※ Information on reporting loss of nationality is detailed below)

 

Eligibility for application for restoration of nationality

  1. Those who were Koreans in the past but have lost their Korean nationality

  2. Korean nationals who voluntarily acquire foreign nationality

  3. A person with multiple nationalities who has lost the nationality of the Republic of Korea because he did not choose a nationality within the nationality selection period

  4. A person who has received a nationality selection order and has not followed the order within the period

  5. A person with multiple nationalities who has renounced the nationality of the Republic of Korea

  6. Those who have lost their Korean nationality by not giving up their foreign nationality within 6 months after acquiring Korean nationality through naturalization, restoration of nationality, etc.

  7. A person who acquired a foreign nationality through marriage, adoption, recognition, etc. with a foreigner, but lost the nationality of the Republic of Korea because he did not report holding the nationality of the Republic of Korea within 6 months

  8. 1998.6.13. A foreign woman who was previously married to a Korean man and acquired Korean nationality at the same time as the marriage, but lost her Korean nationality because she did not give up her foreign nationality within 6 months from the date of acquisition.

Documents to be submitted

  • Application for restoration of nationality

  • Nationality Restoration Statement

  • Family Relations Notice

  • Original and photocopy of passport

  • Original and copy of residence permit

  • Original and copy of citizenship certificate

  • Closed basic certificate, copy of expulsion

Nationality Restoration Examination Period
  • The nationality recovery review period will take at least 6 months.

    ※ If you leave Korea after applying for restoration of nationality, the examination will be suspended during the departure period.

 
Nationality Restoration Permit
  • If the restoration of nationality is approved, a notice of permission for restoration of nationality is sent to the residence from the Minister of Justice.

    ※ Approval status will be sent to the mobile phone number you entered at the time of application.

    ※ Upon receipt of the Nationality Recovery Permit, you must visit the nearest city, county, or district office to obtain a basic certificate and confirm whether or not the contents of the Nationality Recovery Permit have been filled out and any errors.

Pledge of non-exercise of foreign nationality
  • If you have been issued a permit for recovery of nationality and a basic certificate, you must visit the immigration office where you applied for a permit for recovery of nationality, fill out and submit the "Pledge of Non-Exercise of Foreign Nationality".

  • After signing the oath of non-exercise of foreign nationality, you must obtain and use a Korean passport when entering or leaving the country, and your status as a foreigner cannot be recognized in Korea.

   ※ The oath of non-exercise of foreign nationality must be made within one year from the date of permission for restoration of nationality.

Resident registration report
  1. Submit the "Oath of Foreign Nationality Non-Exercise" at the Immigration Office, and when it is accepted, a "Confirmation of Foreign Nationality Non-Exercise Oath" will be issued.

  2. Take this confirmation, basic certificate, and 2 photos to the resident center where you live, report your resident registration, and get your resident registration card issued.

  3. After reporting your resident registration, you can issue a Korean passport.
